Sustainable Economic Development in the Food Growing Industry
from: Sustainable economic development in the food industry starts with the farmers; they must take measures to produce food without harming the environment. In past years a farmer might try to grow many crops; however, there were always problems with erosion and soil depletion. Sustainable economic development calls for a specialization and mechanization in planting to produce fewer crops well. Rather than farmers trying to grow soy beans, corn, wheat, and many more, they will grow crops that will grow year after year without depleting the soil.Sustainable economic development practices allow the farmers to grow a small variety of crops indefinitely. To prevent the soil from eroding the growers plant their crops in contoured rows allowing for channeling of rain runoff that carries soil with it. After every growing season the farmers measure the crop residue, which are the stems that are left after the crop has been harvested. The higher the crop residue the greater the soil conservation due to less erosion. Rain drops falling from the sky hit the ground at 20 miles per hour. Without crop residue the soil will be washed away in erosion, but the higher the crop residue the less soil that can be dislodged and washed away, thereby preserving the environment.
Crop growers must employ sustainable economic development practices to maintain an ecological balance in the soil to produce crops indefinitely. Being conservative and conscientious with resources, and pesticides will allow the growers to produce lucrative abundant crops every year. Pesticides are used to protect the crops from being infested with insects that feed on the crops. When used properly, pesticides promote public health and protect the environment. Sustainable economic development practices in crop farming includes the proper use of pesticides to prevent pollution. Many growers employ sustainable economic development in the form of botanicals, such as Pyrenthrin and several others that are harmful to insects, yet are harmless to the environment and to humans. The less harmful ways to control pets will help to increase the fertility of the soil. The goal of sustainable economic development in farming is to produce good food at a profit without harming the environment, and without using harmful chemicals that will harm the consumer.
Using more natural fertilizers such as the ingredients obtained through composting, and horse manure, are great ways to implement sustainable economic development, in that you will not be adding harmful chemicals into the soil; however, that is not the only way. Farmers may also use a natural fertilizer that is commercially made called NPK (a combination of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium).
Commercial crop growers need to produce a large crop that yields a fair profit when the product goes to market. Sustainable economic development plays a major role on many levels from preventing soil loss through erosion, plant loss though insect invasion, and crop loss through lack of specialization. Growing crops for the food market is a science, and throughout history the farmer has learned the techniques to yield the most crops from the soil.
